Functionalism: Functionalists believe society has a common culture; they focus on consensus which is agreement. They believe that key institutions such as family, government etc. help society work well. Its belief in the same values, they look at society and explain it as a system, they want to know what contributes to society as a whole. They look at the key institutions as the human body and believe these institutions help society to function. They present an overly harmonious picture of society. Marists regard functionalists as severely underestimating the degree of conflict in society. Interactionists raise issues about individual; action and choice they view functionalists as too deterministic. Marx has been criticised for the priority he gives to economic factors, Marx underestimated the growth of the middle class,. Feminism: There are different types of feminism, but in general feminists believe that women should have equal rights to men. They see important aspects of society as ‘patriarchal’ – male dominated, feminists have fought to change things for women and they see different ways of doing this e.g. campaign for changes in the law and new social policies. Overall there have been legal changes that have benefited women. Interactionists: Focus on individual interpretations, how you interpret things are different not everyone is the same. It sees action as meaningful to the people involved, they focus on the definition of the situation, they examine how things come to be defined and interpreted the way they are, some of them are interested in the way that some groups are labelled and how that label has an impact on the individual. However Interactionists are criticised for ignoring the historical and social settings in which interaction takes place, not everybody’s interpretations are given the same validity, and with regard to labelling critics argue that not everyone goes along with the label, some people may resist.
